Owl

     ... wise, calm, introspective

You often go unseen, but you are there,
Perched in the corner of the room or the highest branch,
You are the observer,
Patient, wise and calm… you watch.

The forest beyond, is dark, yet full of movement and mystery.
Creatures scurry about their lives under blankets of clouds and a soft-moon sky.
And from your perch you see every leaf, every movement, every ray of moonlight.
You are calm.

Other animals fear the night, you embrace it.
Wisdom is in your eyes, and yet, perhaps, a warm side when you nest and keep your family warm.
As you soar in the night sky you fly silently.
You maneuver between trees with the precision of an archer's arrow, and the silence of a atlas moth.

Perched alone, yet not alone.
You have the night, the calm, and a life of introspection.
You are a majestic dreamer,
Life isn't about the volume of water flowing through a forest, it's the water retained that matters.

About this Poem...

Animal: Owl
Description/motivation: Perhaps written about me... since my spirit animal is the burrowing owl. I'm not really sure I just wrote it. I adore owls because they are so misunderstood in many ways, they can be very affectionate and playful as pets. If you watch this amazing True Facts video you'll have a great appreciation while you have a hoot laughing. Owls can't really rotate their eyes - that's why they stare straight at you and can turn their necks so far around. One of many facts in the video.

This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here.
